OLYMPIA – A new law improves the fairness of Washington’s tax system for employers who fail to pay unemployment taxes on time. Until now, delinquent employers were assigned the maximum possible tax rate, plus a penalty amount, regardless of whether their regular tax rate was 1 percent or 6 percent.

Increase in 2009 wages brings small bump in jobless benefits
OLYMPIA – The loss of thousands of low-paying jobs helped to increase the average wage in Washington in 2009, according to the Employment Security Department. The 1.9 percent increase drove the average annual wage to $47,153, the smallest increase since 2004. The average weekly wage was $906.

Jobless rate drops for second straight month
OLYMPIA – Washington’s unemployment rate fell to 9.1 percent in May, the lowest level since the same month a year ago. The state economy also picked up an estimated 8,600 jobs in May, the bulk of which were federal Census jobs. With the May job gains, Washington has added jobs in four of the first five months of 2010, for a net gain of 25,800 so far this year.

Washington jobless rate falls for first time in three years
OLYMPIA – Washington’s unemployment rate fell in April for the first time in more than three years, backed by an increase of 5,800 jobs. The rate went from 9.5 percent in March to 9.2 percent in April. The last time the unemployment rate declined was March 2007, when the rate moved from 4.5 percent to 4.4 percent, a record low in Washington. Since then, the rate has stayed the same or increased for 36 straight months.
