Summary

With a population of 7,497 people, Ferry County has one of the state’s smallest labor markets. The largest demographic is people aged 65 to 74 years with 20.0% of total population share. In the sparsely populated and very rugged mountainous regions of Ferry County, unemployment is typically higher than most other counties in the state. Ferry County is located in the northeastern part of Washington. It is known for its rugged natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. Republic serves as the county seat and is the largest city in Ferry County.

The county spans 2,257 square miles, including 24 square miles of water. Its landscape features forests, mountains, and several lakes and rivers.

Ferry County was created out of Stevens County in 1899 and is named after Elisha P. Ferry, the first governor of Washington.

  • Ferry County has over 2,214 people in the labor force, with a decrease of -1.0% or -23 workers from December 2023. Employed workforce decreased by -0.5% or -10 workers from December 2023 to December 2024. Unemployed workers decreased by -5.9% or -13 workers. About 208 people were unemployed and looking for work.

  • As of December 2024, total nonfarm employment in Ferry County was 1,700 jobs. Total nonfarm employment remained unchanged in over-the-month changes and decreased by -50 jobs or -2.9% in over-the-year changes. Private sectors remained unchanged over-the-month with total 810 jobs and recorded decrease -40 jobs or -4.7% over-the-year.

  • Goods producing sectors decreased from November to December by -10 jobs or -5.0% and decreased by -30 jobs or -13.6% from December 2023 to December 2024. Construction industry cluster decreased by -10 jobs or -10.0% in over-the-month change and decreased by -30 jobs or -18.25% in over-the-year change. Manufacturing remained unchanged over-the-month and decreased by -10 jobs or -9.1% in over-the-year change.

  • Service providing sectors total with 1,510 jobs and recorded an increase of 10 jobs or 0.7% in over-the-month change and decreased by -20 jobs or -1.3% from December 2023 to December 2024. Trade, transportation, and utilities remained unchanged over-the-month and over-the-year.

  • Leisure and hospitality remained unchanged from November to December and decreased by -10 jobs or -5.3% in over-the-year change. Government services including public educational services remained unchanged over-the-month with total 890 jobs and decreased by -10 jobs or -1.1% in over-the-year change.
