January 2026 highlights

Updated April 2026

Compared to December 2025, the unemployment rate decreased from 6.6% to 6.4% (2,180 unemployed individuals). Employers reported 200 fewer jobs on payrolls (for a total of 27,270 jobs).

  • Lewis County is a gateway between the lumber producing regions of Western Washington and major transportation routes.
  • Wood product manufacturing is a major industry, accounting for about 1,500 of the county's 3,000 manufacturing jobs.
  • Other major industries include government, health care and social assistance, retail trade and accommodation and food services.
  • Employment in wholesale trade increased dramatically after the Covid-19 pandemic, nearly doubling from 2019 to 2024.

This includes all employees with paid positions tracked in a company’s payroll system. This doesn’t include agriculture jobs or jobs outside of formal payroll such as freelancers, contractors and self-employed individuals. Numbers in this section are estimates generated by a monthly survey.

In January 2026, Lewis County has 27,270 jobs.

One month ago, in Dec. 2025 there were 200 more jobs on payrolls (for a total of 27,470 jobs).

  • 120 fewer construction jobs. This decrease likely reflects seasonal factors.
  • 110 fewer private education and health services jobs.
  • 70 fewer retail trade jobs. Employment in retail trade tends to fall in January, following holiday hiring increases.
  • 110 more government jobs. This increase was driven by state government.

One year ago, in Jan. 2025 there were 500 (1.9%) fewer jobs on payrolls (for a total of 26,770 jobs).

  • 180 (3.6%) more goods-producing jobs. This includes increases across mining and logging, construction, and manufacturing.
  • 210 (7.8%) more leisure and hospitality jobs. This industry saw relatively steady growth throughout 2025.
  • 80 (1.7%) fewer private education and health services jobs.
  • 60 (4.1%) fewer professional and business services jobs.
  • Other increases occurred in retail and wholesale trade.
