Labor force (LAUS)

View data on the number of employed and unemployed individuals across Washington and in local areas.

Local area unemployment statistics (LAUS) estimates show increases and decreases in unemployment by county or the whole state. This includes the number of people working, looking for work or unemployed, and what percentage of the labor force is out of work.

Use the reports to see unemployment and workforce changes to better understand local economic conditions. You can also use them to compare unemployment trends to support planning, funding or program requests and decisions.

About the data

Every month, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) surveys households. The survey counts whether residents are employed or unemployed and looking for work. The survey does not count people who stopped looking for work.

We use the survey data to create local unemployment estimates.

For more data and maps at the state and national level, see the BLS site’s animated map and the BLS site’s glossary.
