Summary

Nonfarm employment totaled 9,310 in Jefferson County in January 2025 (preliminary) — down 70 from December 2024 and up 420 from twelve months earlier. The January 2025 preliminary unemployment rate increased slightly to 6% from the December rate of 5.6. The January 2024 revised unemployment rate was 6.3%.

Over the year the 420 gain was buoyed by 120 entries into government employment, a 90 job increase in leisure and hospitality, and a gain of 70 in retail trade. Construction was up 30 jobs and manufacturing was up 10 jobs over the year.

In the month from December 2024 to January 2025, leisure and hospitality gained 50 jobs, education and health services gained 20, professional and business services gained 10, and information and financial activities gained 10. Over the year from January 2024 to January 2025, government employment gained 110 jobs. Education and health services was unchanged over the year and gained 40 jobs over the month. Manufacturing lost 10 jobs over the year and was unchanged over the month.

Jefferson County is located on the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington state. It is nestled between the Admiralty Inlet and Clallam, Mason, Grays Harbor and Kitsap counties. It faces the Pacific Ocean to the west and Hood Canal to the east. Named for President Thomas Jefferson, it was created in 1852 from a portion of Lewis County. The county seat is Port Townsend.

Much of Jefferson County is publicly managed. About 60% of the county comprises the Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest and roughly 20% percent is under state and federal jurisdiction. The Hoh Reservation and a small corner of the Quinault Reservation are also located in Jefferson County. Jefferson County is a mid-sized county, ranking 18th in the state in land area. Its population density, as measured by people per square mile, ranks 29th.

  • The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6% in January 2025, up from 5.6% in December 2024 and down from 6.3% in January 2024.

  • The labor force contracted slightly over the year, losing 36 workers.

Payroll employment

  • Total nonfarm employment increased by 110 from December 2024 to January 2025.

  • The largest increases from December to January 2025 were observed in leisure and hospitality, education and health services and construction. Government employment dipped in January.

  • Total nonfarm employment increased by 140 jobs from January 2024 to January 2025.

  • Overall, employment in government, trade, transportation and utilities, and leisure and hospitality were bright spots as jobs were added.
