Guidance for apprentices

Apprentices can claim unemployment benefits during training. Learn when to apply for benefits or restart your claim, and when to file weekly unemployment claims.

When to apply for benefits or restart your claim

If you have not filed an unemployment claim in the past 12 months, you will need to begin a new application. If you applied for benefits within the last 12 months but have not filed a weekly claim within the last 5 weeks, you will need to restart your claim.

Apply or restart your claim the Sunday before your training week begins.

The best way to apply or restart a claim is through eServices. You can also restart a claim using our automated phone system. Call 800-318-6022 from 12:01 a.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Friday.

When to file your weekly unemployment claim

After your claim is open, you need to file weekly claims for any weeks you want to receive unemployment benefits. To claim benefits during your training, file your weekly claim the Sunday after your training week.

Continue to file weekly claims for each week you are in training.
