Labor force (LAUS)

View data on how many people are employed and unemployed across Washington and in local areas.

Local area unemployment statistics (LAUS) are monthly estimates of the labor force.

Every month, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) surveys households. The survey counts whether residents are employed or unemployed and looking for work. The survey does not count people who have stopped looking for work.

We use the survey data to create local unemployment estimates.

As of June 2025, we have consolidated our downloadable reports into three files that include all county, city, and workforce development area data.

LAUS Files

Not seasonally adjusted current estimates (XLSX, 21KB)

Not seasonally adjusted historical estimates (XLSX, 2.9MB)

Seasonally adjusted historical estimates (XLSX, 380KB)

Additional reports are available for download in the report library.

Note 3/27/2025: BLS has paused release of a portion of metropolitan data. This is based on Geographic Changes explained at Upcoming LAUS Geography and Data Changes in 2025: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Context for these estimates, including discussion of alternate measures of labor underutilization, can be found in the Monthly Employment Report. The Monthly Employment report page also features the 2025 monthly publication schedule, which includes the LAUS reports dates.
