June 2025 highlights
Since May, the not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.5% to 3.6% and total nonfarm employment increased by 50 jobs.
Summary
Total nonfarm employment was estimated at 18,870 jobs in June 2025. This is up 50 jobs compared to May 2025 and down 150 jobs over the year. The size of the labor force decreased by 1,078 workers over the month. The unemployment rate in Island County decreased over the month from 4,5% to 3.6%.
Geography

Island County is situated in the Salish Sea in northwest Washington. As its name suggests, it is made up of several islands. The two largest are Whidbey and Camano. Island County is the second smallest county in Washington by landmass, just larger than neighboring San Juan County. Island County is bounded to the north by Deception Pass and to the south by Puget Sound. Skagit Bay and Saratoga Passage are located to the east and Admiralty Inlet and the Strait of Juan de Fuca are west. Skagit and Snohomish counties lie to the east of Island County and the Olympic Peninsula lies across the water to the west.
Island County is one of six counties included in the Seattle-Tacoma Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMSA).
The largest employer is U.S. Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor. Oak Harbor is the largest city in the county.

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.6% in June 2025, down from 4.5% in May 2025 and 3.9% in June 2024.

Payroll employment
- Total nonfarm employment increased by 50 jobs from May, bringing the estimated job count to 18,870 jobs (150 jobs below June 2024).
- Construction employment was down. There were 10 jobs less than May 2025 and June 2024 respectively.
- Retail trade decreased, down 20 jobs from May and down 80 jobs compared to June 2024.
- Professional and business services jobs increased: up 130 jobs from May and 70 jobs compared to June 2024.
- Private education and health services was up by 100 jobs over the year and up 50 jobs from May 2025.
- Leisure and hospitality was down by 40 jobs from May and down 70 jobs compared to June 2024.
