Monthly initial and continuing unemployment insurance claims report for December 2021
For the 4-week moving average ending Jan. 1, 2022, compared to the previous 4-week moving average:
- Regular initial claims increased by 1,826 to a total of 7,490. As with the previous 4-week moving average, the increase is likely due to seasonal layoffs, primarily in the construction and agriculture industries.
- Regular continued claims increased by 3,713 to a total of 49,848. -

Paid Leave qualifying period expanded for workers impacted by COVID-19
New legislation took effect in August that expanded the qualifying period for people who worked fewer hours because of COVID-19. If they meet other eligibility requirements, they may be able to qualify for paid family or medical leave benefits under this new expansion.

Improving economy, declining jobless claims contribute to lowest 4-week moving average for regular continued claims since start of the pandemic
The 4-week moving average ending Oct. 30, 2021, compared to the 4-week moving average for the week ending Oct. 2, shows that regular continued claims decreased by 13,163 to a total of 50,848. This total is the lowest 4-week moving average for regular continued claims since the start of the pandemic.
