We are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except on state holidays.

What are some interesting facts about the Employment Security Department?

Created: 1939 

Number of employees (as of February 2009): 2,136 (1,798 permanent).  

Employees of color: 28 percent in late 2008.  

Two-year budget (2007-09): $617 million, including pass-through money. 

Revenue sources: Federal sources are the Unemployment Compensation Administrative Account, the Employment Services Administrative Account and General Fund–Federal. State sources include the Administrative Contingency Account (penalties and interest from unemployment tax or benefit violations), General Fund–Local (pass-through funds to local), and General Fund–State. 

Relevant RCWs: Title 50 of the Revised Code of Washington, plus several federal laws.

Does Employment Security contract call-center work overseas?

No. The department maintains two call centers to process unemployment claims. One is in Seattle and the other is in Spokane.

What is Employment Security doing to root out bureaucratese?
