Four Disaster Assistance Center staff members, three standing and one sitting, appear behind a table

In response to the wildfires that have swept through the Spokane area, a beacon of hope has emerged in the form of the newly opened Disaster Assistance Center. Volunteers have taken on the task of unloading boxes of essential supplies, including food and water. This hub of support aims to streamline aid for those affected by the wildfires.

Simone Ramel-McKay, a representative from Spokane County Emergency Management, articulated the center’s primary goal, stating, 'We don’t want people to have to drive all over town to get their questions answered.' Located at 3305 W. Whistalks Way (Building 9) in Spokane, the center launched with representation from 10 groups, including the Red Cross, Veterans Outreach Program, and Salvation Army. This collaboration sets the stage for an even broader range of services as more groups and agencies join the cause.

Families and individuals affected by the Gray and Oregon Road fires are urged to please register with emergency management, either in person or online. This step is crucial in assisting emergency management by providing an accurate overview of the scope of the impact to the federal government to secure additional aid. 'The more people that encourage their neighbors to register and they get registered, the greater potential is that resources will open up,' said Ramel-McKay.

Amid the outpouring of generosity Ramel-McKay pointed out the effectiveness of making monetary contributions rather than physical donations to avoid overwhelming the system. Both Red Cross and Innovia Foundation stand ready to assist fire victims. Beyond material support, the Employment Security Department also plays an important role in aiding those who have faced job loss or work-related issues due to the fires.

The Disaster Assistance Center’s doors will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., extending its commitments to the community for an indefinite period. This resource is a testament to the strength and resilience of the Spokane community. Regular updates about available services can be located on the Spokane County Emergency Management Facebook page.
