Results will help set wages for future
OLYMPIA – The state Employment Security Department (ESD) this week announced new videos (in English and Spanish) to assist workers in completing the first annual survey of agricultural workers, designed to help validate results of its annual Agricultural Wage and Practice Survey of employers.
The annual Agricultural Wage and Practice survey covers occupations and activities for which employers have requested H-2A workers. The H-2A program allows agricultural employers to bring foreign workers to the U.S. to fill temporary agricultural jobs when there are not enough qualified U.S. workers available.
The University of Washington is currently conducting surveys of both employers and workers on ESD’s behalf, reaching out to a sample of 3,000 agricultural employers and roughly 8,000 workers in Washington.
The U.S. Dept. of Labor (USDOL) will use the results of the survey to establish prevailing wage rates and employment standards required in agricultural employment contracts, including H-2A guest worker contracts. USDOL posts prevailing wage rates for Washington state in its Agricultural Online Wage Library.
In line with USDOL guidance, Washington launched the worker survey this year and will compare results from the worker survey to employer responses to gain a greater understanding of agricultural wages and practices in Washington state. Both the worker survey and videos are available in English and Spanish.
Employment Security developed a guidance video to help employers answer the survey as accurately as possible as well. A sample of the employer survey is also available.
ESD will post results of the surveys on the Employment Security website when they are available. Results from prior surveys are posted there as well.
ESD also has new labor market Web information and tools, including a video tutorial about how to display popular information and data.
