Reminder: ESD transitioning from weekly to monthly initial claims press releases
This is a reminder that in our Oct. 7 weekly initial claims release, we shared a change in the frequency of press releases announcing initial unemployment insurance claims data. ESD has moved to monthly instead of weekly press releases. We will publish the first monthly initial claims release for the month of October on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Initial unemployment insurance claims for week of Sept. 26 - Oct. 2 2021
During the week of September 26 to October 2, there were 4,814 initial regular unemployment claims, down 2.0 percent from the prior week. Total claims filed by Washingtonians for all unemployment benefit categories numbered 86,615 down 10.8 percent from the prior week.

During the week of September 19 to September 25, there were 4,914 initial regular unemployment claims, up 1.3 percent from the prior week. Total claims filed by Washingtonians for all unemployment benefit categories numbered 97,068 down 14.6 percent from the prior week.

During the week of September 12 to September 18, there were 4,850 initial regular unemployment claims, down 0.2 percent from the prior week. Total claims filed by Washingtonians for all unemployment benefit categories numbered 112,948, down 55.4 percent from the prior week, primarily due to the expiration of federal pandemic benefit programs the previous week.

Monthly Employment Report for August 2021
Washington’s economy added 16,800 jobs in August and the state’s preliminary seasonally adjusted monthly unemployment rate remained constant at 5.1 percent from July to August, according to the Employment Security Department (ESD).
