OLYMPIA – The Washington Reading Corps AmeriCorps is looking for people passionate about literacy to work with kids in Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan county elementary schools.

Positions are available in Whatcom County schools and early learning sites:

  • Bellingham School District
  • Ferndale School District

In Skagit County schools and early learning sites:

  • La Conner School District
  • Anacortes School District
  • Burlington-Edison School District

And in San Juan County:

Reading Corps members need to be 18 years or older. They commit to 10 ½-month terms of community service through AmeriCorps. In return, they receive a modest living allowance, health insurance, training and an educational scholarship. Eligible members with children also can receive help with childcare.

The Reading Corps is part of the federal AmeriCorps program and administered by the state Employment Security Department. AmeriCorps will place 150 members in 75 schools and early learning centers statewide in the 2015-16 program year. Members will strive to tutor 5,400 students, recruit 3,000 community volunteers, and engage 24,000 family members in their students’ learning.

The Washington Reading Corps motto, “Invest a year and start your career,” has its roots in reality. A 2013 study by the Corporation for National and Community Service found that volunteers are 27 percent more likely than non-volunteers to find a job after being out of work.
