State’s Annual Agricultural Wage and Practice Survey starts today

Results will help set wages for future

OLYMPIA – The state Employment Security Department (ESD) today will begin its annual Agricultural Wage and Practice Survey, covering occupations and activities for which employers have requested H-2A workers. The H-2A program allows agricultural employers to bring foreign workers to the U.S. to fill temporary agricultural jobs when there are not enough qualified U.S. workers available.

The University of Washington will conduct the survey on ESD’s behalf, reaching out to a sample of 3,000 agricultural employers in Washington.

The U.S. Dept. of Labor (USDOL) will use the results of the survey to establish prevailing wage rates and employment standards required in agricultural employment contracts, including H-2A guest worker contracts. USDOL posts prevailing wage rates for Washington state in its Agricultural Online Wage Library.

This year, in line with USDOL guidance, the state will also conduct an agricultural wage and practice survey for workers. Researchers will compare results from the worker survey to employer responses to gain a greater understanding of agricultural wages and practices in Washington state. The University of Washington will conduct this survey as well, reaching out to roughly 8,000 workers in English and Spanish.

Employment Security has developed a guidance video to assist growers in answering the survey as accurately as possible. A sample of the survey is also available.

ESD will also develop a video for workers in English and Spanish. This video will be available when the worker survey begins.

ESD will post results of the survey on the Employment Security website when they are available. Results from prior surveys can be found here as well.

ESD has new labor market Web information and tools, including a video tutorial about how to display popular information and data.
