Volunteers of all ages can work with environmental specialists to help restore wildlife habitat at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge on several mornings in February and March.

Emily Long of the Washington Service Corps AmeriCorps will use her expertise in environmental science to help volunteers plant native trees and shrubs at the refuge on February 7, 11, 21, 25 and March 4 and 7.

Volunteers will learn not only the best planting techniques, but also some Ridgefield Refuge history and how to sight area wildlife, including geese, ducks, sandhill cranes, swans, bald eagles and deer.

Long will give volunteers special access to an area in the refuge normally closed off to the public. Once there, she'll teach volunteers about the tools they'll use, how to install protective tubes on the plants and give some safety tips. She'll even supply hot drinks and snacks!

"I like to help people feel comfortable," Long said. "This project is the biggest we've ever done, and we really need the help. So far, volunteers have helped us plant more than 5,000 trees and shrubs, and our goal is to plant about another 2,500."

No experience is needed. Wear gloves and waterproof shoes or boots. Registration is encouraged, but not necessary. To ensure a spot, contact Emily Long or Lynn Cornelius, 360-887-3883.

Everyone must sign a volunteer service agreement at the event. Volunteers under 18 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian. See the Friends of the Refuge website for more information.
