OLYMPIA – Washington corporations will no longer pay state unemployment taxes on their corporate officers unless a corporation requests coverage for all its officers and the Employment Security Department approves the request.

Previously, eligible corporate officers were automatically covered for unemployment benefits unless the corporation asked to be exempted.

Corporations must apply by March 1, 2014, to continue uninterrupted coverage for all of 2014.

In another change, corporate officers who are covered for unemployment benefits may be eligible for benefits under new circumstances, even when some wages used on the unemployment claim are from the corporation.

Corporations that don’t pay state unemployment taxes on corporate officers still must pay the full amount of federal unemployment taxes to the Internal Revenue Service.
