OLYMPIA – Washington’s economy tallied its fifth consecutive month of private-sector job gains in October, while the unemployment remained at 9.1 percent. The September rate was revised from an estimated 9 percent to 9.1 percent.

The private sector picked up 1,900 jobs and the public sector added 4,000 jobs, nearly all in higher education and K-12 schools.  State government, not counting higher education, shed about 100 jobs.

So far in 2010, Washington has added 10,200 private-sector jobs. Factoring in a substantial loss of government jobs, there has been an estimated net gain of 6,000 jobs during the past 10 months. 

Private-sector industries that added jobs were professional and business services, up 1,500; wholesale trade, up 800; information, up 400; financial activities, up 400; and retail trade, up 300.

Jobs were lost in construction, down 400; manufacturing, down 400; transportation, warehousing and utilities, down 300; leisure and hospitality, down 200; and mining and logging, down 200.  

Year over year, Washington had 8,500 fewer jobs last month than in October 2009, a 0.3 percent decrease.  Nationally, employment grew by 0.6 percent over the past year.

An estimated 302,286 people (not seasonally adjusted) in Washington were unemployed and looking for work, and 223,594 people received unemployment benefits from Washington in October.

This was the fifth straight month that the private sector added jobs.

Higher education and K-12 schools added about four-thousand jobs in October, after four months of job losses.

So far, Washington has added an estimated 10,200 private-sector jobs this year.
