September 2020 Monthly Employment Report
Washington’s economy added 2,400 jobs in September and the state’s preliminary seasonally adjusted monthly unemployment rate for September decreased from 8.4 percent (adjusted) to 7.8 percent according to the Employment Security Department (ESD).

Initial unemployment insurance claims for week of September 27 – October 3, 2020
During the week of September 27 through October 3, there were 15,496 initial regular unemployment claims (down 12.6 percent from the prior week) and 506,708 total claims for all unemployment benefit categories (down 4.5 percent from the prior week) filed by Washingtonians, according to the Employment Security Department (ESD).

During the week of September 20 through September 26, there were 17,734 initial regular unemployment claims (down 9.4 percent from the prior week) and 530,360 total claims for all unemployment benefit categories (down 1.8 percent from the prior week) filed by Washingtonians, according to the Employment Security Department (ESD).

Better than expected outlook for unemployment fund offers break to Washington businesses in 2021
OLYMPIA – The Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD) today announced there will not be a solvency tax for employers in 2021, a savings for businesses of nearly $200 million, based on a higher than expected unemployment trust fund balance at the end of September. At this time, due to improved economic forecasting, it is also projected that the state will not need to take out federal loans to continue paying unemployment benefits in 2021, as was previously anticipated.

Washington state named Community Impact Leader of the Year for its support of military spouses
OLYMPIA – Washington state has been named Community Impact Leader of the Year by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes division for extensive efforts to boost employment for military spouses – a result of collaboration between the state’s Employment Security Department, the Washington State Department of Veteran’s Affairs and Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
