Whatcom County elementary school kids will learn about recycling and waste prevention while digging their little hands into great big globs of goopy, mushy paper pulp.

Their job will be to make recycled paper by mixing, screening and pouring multi-colored pulp into cookie cutters. After it dries, they'll make note cards and donate them to local community centers and nursing homes in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"While having fun and getting messy, the students will learn how to conserve and recycle resources," said Haley Mountain, a Washington Service Corps AmeriCorps member who will lead the project at Everson, Eagleridge and Beach elementary schools. Mountain serves in the Sustainable Schools program at RE-Sources for Sustainable Communities, a non-profit environmental organization based in Bellingham.

For the 2014-15 service year, 723 Washington Service Corps AmeriCorps members are serving 10-and-a-half-month terms of community service at 426 locations around the state, meeting educational, environmental, health and public-safety needs and more in Washington communities. In return, they receive a modest living allowance, health insurance, training and an educational scholarship.

During the last service year, Washington Service Corps members responded to 74 disasters, helped 10,000 veterans with various services, educated 36,000 people about energy efficiency and environmental stewardship, tutored 9,500 K-12 students and educated 14,000 people about living healthy lives.
