Governor’s Committee honors employers who hire people with disabilities

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues & Employment and the Washington State Business Leadership Network has honored seven public and private employers statewide for their exemplary work recruiting, hiring, retaining and promoting individuals with disabilities.

“People who have disabilities offer tremendous energy and talent,” said Chris Carnell, Governor’s Committee chairman. “By opening opportunities for people with disabilities, these businesses are reaping the benefit of that resource and acting as role models for other Washington employers.”

Winners of the 2014 Governor’s Employer Awards Program are:

  • Battelle-Pacific Northwest National Laboratory – Richland
  • Community-Minded Enterprises – Spokane
  • Hide-a-Hose – Monroe
  • Microsoft Real Estate Division – Redmond
  • Pepsi Beverage Company – Spokane
  • Walgreens – Sedro-Woolley
  • Washington State Department of Financial Institutions

Washington businesses, agencies, organizations and individuals submitted the nominations and a panel of Governor’s Committee members and volunteers selected the award winners.

The committee also honored two individuals for their commitment to people with disabilities. 

  • Daniel E. Eberle received the Governor’s Trophy in Memory of Carolyn Blair Brown, which is the highest honor given to someone with a disability who has significantly empowered people with disabilities in Washington. Eberle is the disability support services coordinator at Bates Technical College in Tacoma and a member emeritus of the Governor's Committee.
  • Corwin R. Scott received the Chair’s Award. With a background in law, Scott has worked with Orion Industries in Auburn, helping people with disabilities who have criminal histories navigate the legal system. He now directs the Evergreen Empowerment Group in Tacoma, which has a similar mission.

The Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues & Employment advises the Governor, Legislature and state agencies on policies that affect people with disabilities.
