Get into the greenery with AmeriCorps for MLK Day

OLYMPIA – If you feel a need to kneel in the weeds, the Washington Service Corps knows about plenty of opportunities to play in the greenery this month to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Put on some gloves and prepare to get muddy as you plant trees, remove invasive plants and restore animal habitat. Members of the state’s oldest and largest AmeriCorps community service program are planning volunteer opportunities around Western Washington this month to honor the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

If you yearn to serve, find a list of projects on the Washington Service Corps website. Most of the events are scheduled on Jan. 21, but a few are on Jan. 18 and 19.

The Washington Service Corps enlists members 17 and older to serve at schools, nonprofits and government organizations to meet pressing educational, health and economic needs in communities around the state. It’s part of the national AmeriCorps program and is administered by the state Employment Security Department.
