Background on imposter fraud
Since the end of April, the Employment Security Department has seen a significant rise in reports of imposter fraud. This is where bad actors have stolen Washingtonians’ personal information from sources outside of the agency and are using it to apply for unemployment benefits. The Employment Security Department has not had a breach of data and personal information has not been taken from the agency.
If an individual has reason to believe that someone else filed for benefits using their information, the fastest and best way to report it is to go to the Employment Security Department’s website and follow the instructions provided there to so that investigators can follow-up.
