Washington veterans to speak at war memorials on capitol campus

OLYMPIA – Four Washington veterans will speak at the 25th Annual Veterans Day ceremony from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, on the state capitol campus.

The public is invited to gather first at the WWII Memorial near the corner of Capitol Way and 11th Avenue. The group will then walk to the Winged Victory Monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and finally to the Korean War Memorial, hearing a speaker at each stop.

Gary Condra, deputy director of the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs will act as emcee. Speakers will include Don Meseck, Elise Rowe and Karl Kraber of the Employment Security Department (ESD).

The ceremony is sponsored by the International Association of Workforce Professionals (IAWP) Washington Chapter and supported by the Employment Security Department and the Washington Federation of State Employees.  The IAWP Washington Chapter is the primary professional organization for ESD employees, focused on supporting workforce professionals with educational and networking opportunities.

Each stop on the memorial tour also will feature music by vocalists Rhetta Barker or Cheryl Waters of ESD, or the Harmony Knights — a barbershop quartet.

“We’re very proud to have sponsored this special event for 25 consecutive years,” said Sheila Johnson-Teeter, IAWP State chapter president, event organizer and ESD employee.

The Color Guard from the Intertribal Warriors Society will open and close the ceremony. Trumpeter Vincent Anderson of the Health Care Authority will formally end the ceremony with “Taps.”

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the IAWP will supply poppies and flags for participants to place at the memorials.

ESD supports Washington’s veterans in a number of ways including:

  • Its Veterans Program which helps connect veterans with employers across the state through WorkSource;

  • The multiagency hiring initiative called YesVets through which 381 employers have hired 616 veterans; and

The Work Opportunity Tax Credit which provides a tax credit to employers who hire eligible veterans, especially those with disabilities.
