Updated April 2026

Compared to December 2025, the unemployment rate decreased from 5.0% to 4.9% (7,022 unemployed individuals). Employers reported 1,100 fewer jobs on payrolls (for a total of 132,000 jobs).

  • Thurston County is home to Washington’s state capitol of Olympia, and as such, its major employer has historically been state government.
  • While this lessened slightly during the pandemic, state government still makes up about 23% of all jobs in the county.
  • Other major sectors in Thurston County include health care and social assistance, retail trade, accommodation and food services and professional, scientific and technical services.
  • The county has a large population of workers aged 25 to 54 years old, leading to a strong labor force participation rate.

This includes all employees with paid positions tracked in a company’s payroll system. This doesn’t include agriculture jobs or jobs outside of formal payroll such as freelancers, contractors and self-employed individuals. Numbers in this section are estimates generated by a monthly survey.

In January 2026, Thurston County has 132,000 jobs.

One month ago, in Dec. 2025 there were 1,100 more jobs on payrolls (for a total of 133,100 jobs).

  • 100 fewer goods-producing jobs.
  • 1,000 fewer service-providing jobs. Decreases in the service sector were concentrated in retail trade and in leisure and hospitality, which typically see seasonal reductions in January following holiday hiring. These include:
  • 400 fewer retail trade jobs.
  • 200 fewer leisure and hospitality jobs.
  • Other industry decreases occurred in professional and business services and in private education and health services.

One year ago, in Jan. 2025 there were the same number of jobs on payrolls (for a total of 132,000 jobs).

  • 900 (4.4%) more private education and health services jobs. This industry exhibited consistent growth through 2025, and was the largest contributor to employment gains over the year.
  • 600 (15.8%) more transportation, warehousing, and utilities jobs.
  • 1,200 (2.6%) fewer government jobs. Decreases primarily occurred in state government, which was the largest contributor to job losses over the year.
  • 300 (2.1%) fewer professional and business services jobs.
